Smart Filters can also be created within the Settings Tab: 

Settings > Automation > Smart Filters > Create New Smart Filter

Smart Filters will automatically pull in any products that fit the specific sections smart filter criteria. If a product is out of stock, it will not be pulled in to the smart filter. A product can be hidden from being pulled into a smart filter by using the Ignored Variant function.
